direct x (tm) limitation

When I try and install thief gold , installation fails and the message says a nt packet has been detected and because of a direct x (tm) limitation game won't load. I load and play many others successfully, right now it's Dungeon Siege LOA, because I couldn't get thief to load. What does this mean and how do I fix it? Thank you.
