Direct Cable network problem

Elaine

I am running a direct cable between XP and Me machines.
Both have shared folders on them and the network seems
fine in that both can ping each other by name and IP
address. However, when I try to fond the folders in My
Network Places, they are not there. Add a Network Place
Wizard does not help, XP saying "the folder does not
appear to be valid", Me syaing that "the network is
notpresent or has not started."

This is really confusing me now. Please help.

1. Did you create a user name and password on the XP box
that you are using to logon to XP from the Me machine?
2. Did you create a shared folders with the proper
permissions for the user(s) you created.
3. Are the network workgroup names the same on both
machines?
4. Are there any firewalls enabled on the machines?

5. What are the IP addresses? Are they on the same subnet?
6. Did you run the XP network setup wizard? If you do or
did be sure to turn off XP's firewall.

Elaine,
The fact that ping worksfor both is a good start......but a few questions
:)

Has file and printer sharing been enabled on both systems? (check under the
NIC properties)
Is the XP firewall running ? If so, try disabling temporarily to see if it
cures the problem.(check under NIC properties Advanced tab)
Is the XP guest account enabled?

This will help diagnose the problem.

Regards.
