I have a laptop running XP Professional and a desktop
running Windows Me. When attempting to start the desktop,
I get the error message:
Error Loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows.
When I click on OK, a black screen appears and my PC shuts
down.

Even though I cannot start Windows in the desktop, is it
possible to use a direct cable connection between the two
computers to download files from the desktop to the
laptop?

The good news is you can use direct cable connection
provided that both computers have network cards installed.
Make sure the cable is "Cat5 crossover".
The bad news is you cannot download files from one to the
other due to the desktop failure.
