Direct cable connection from XP to Me

I have been pulling out my hair out for the last three days tring to
do a crossover connection between a Dell Inspiron Laptop running XP and a
Compaq Presario running Me. I have used this same crossover approach and
cable to connect the Presario to a desktop running 98. Could someone please
help with a procedure that allows the ethernet option to be used.
My Dell has no parallel or serial port only USBs.

Thanks a million

Is the Crossover good? Are both of the NICs set to full-duplex and the same
link speed rather than auto? Do each of the NICs have a unique network
address on the same subnet?

Assuming that the crossover cable is properly wired, it should work
fine. Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers, which will
make all the necessary software settings.

If that doesn't help, please post a news group reply with details of
the situation: what you're trying to do on the network, what works,
what doesn't work, what you've tried to fix the problem, complete text
of all error messages, etc. I'm sure that someone can help.

Hi Gentlemen,

Thanks a lot for your time. It turns out that as soon as I enabled file
sharing on the Dell the clear contact was made. I find the transfer rate a
little slow and I don't know what could be done about that?

thanks Steve and Dusty
