Cable problem on XP

I am trying to network my XP and Windows 98 computers
together. I want to do a direct cable connection and have
Ethernet connections in each computer and a crossover
cable. The 98 computer recognises the card and cable but
my XP keeps telling me that my cable is disconnected when
it is connected. The computer came with the Ethernet
connection and I haven't touched an settings. What am I
doing wrong? Can anyone please tell me how to connect
these two computers via ethernet with a crossover cable?
Email me direct at (e-mail address removed) thanks!

If both computers are turned on and their network cards are working,
XP should recognize the connection. Since it doesn't, I suspect that
you don't have a properly wired crossover cable.

One other possibility: the network cards might not be automatically
sensing the right speed and duplex settings. Try setting them both
explicitly to 10 Mbps and half duplex. If that works, try 100 Mbps
and full duplex.

Kiwi \(growing increasingly frustrated\)

Finally last night my XP computer decided to recognise
the crossover cable, which was shop brought, so I can
only assume it is corrected wired up. I have no idea what
I did to make it co-operate. Bad news ... I can't get the
computers to recognise the other computer on the network.
I have tried the XP networking setup programe numerous
times but each time the computers will only recognise the
shared files on their respective harddrives and not
recognise the other computer at all as part of the
network. I am continuing the frustrating fight ...
