Ethernet cables for a small network

I want to connect two computers to an ethernet hub. One has XP and the
other is 98. I'm confused about what kind of cable to buy, i'm not sure
what the difference is between a patch cable, raw cable and a crossover
cable

Or, can I just connect the two computers directly with a crossover cable?
