Digital/Analog/firewire

Ok this is the scenario. I have a Sony Hi8 camcorder. I also have a borrowed
Sony Digital 8 which has firewire connection available. I have a Windows
Media Center Gateway with Emuzed Maui III-G device. So far using MM2 I
haven't been able to capture video. I've tried using RCA connectors on my own
Sony camcorder as well as S-Video. This isn't working to capture video. I
need to buy a firewire, since the only wire I have has a USB connection on
one end with firewire connector on the other. If I do this, will my borrowed
camera be able to send the video to the computer using the firewire
connector? The borrowed Sony does play my Hi8 videos. I know, a lot to ask
but this is something I MUST conquer. I want to make lots of family DVDs.

I bought a Sony Dig 8 last year specifically for the fact that it is backward
compatable with Hi8. I used it via firewire to capture all of my old Hi8
tapes. The quality of the original was not very good, but using firewire, I
know it didn't get any worse. You should definitely use the firewire and the
borrowed camera if possible.

Yes, if the digi 8 plays the tapew it will transfer it to the pc via
firewire. MM should recognise it instantly adn then it's all plain sailing.
Just for info, the USB lead will be just a usb lead, you cannot get a usb
one end and firewire the other, as they are two different things. On this
vain, make sure you get the right cable, most cams have a 4 pin connecter,
while the firewire cards normally have 6 pin.
This piece has how to check if you pc has firewire already, and also gives a
link to pictures of firewire ports and cables for you to try and recognise
them.
