Passthrough - Analog to Digital

J

Jim Johnson

I bought a Sony TRV22 mini-DV camcorder. I have been able
to record the video I take to my PC via firewire (iLink).
No problems. I also have some Hi8 tapes from an old camera
that I want to convert to digital and place on my PC. The
Sony I have is supposed to be able to convert from Analog
to Digital (passthrough).

I have hooked up my Hi8 camera to my Sony DV via s-video
and running the DV to my PC via iLink. When I play the Hi8
camera, I can see the video on my capture application
(Windows Movie Maker). No problems so far.

The problem occurs when I hit the "Start Capture" buttton
on Windows Movie Maker while I am viewing the Hi8 videos.
The software thinks I want to capture from the DV player
and overrides the signal from the Hi8 player, and begins
to record off the DV tape. If I take the DV tape out of
the player, as soon as I hit "Start Capture", I get an
error saying there is no tape in the player.

There has to be something simple I am doing wrong but I
have tired everything I know to do.

Most have reported success using it.
