Difficult Sound Issue

I'm running Win XP Pro on a pentium 4 notebook running 512 meg SD ram

Sound has always been fine but a week ago I lost all sound, including boot
up sound. WMP appears to play but there is no sound on either the speakers
or the output socket. I have tried all the usual things;

1) checked that nothing is muted in the volume control
2) unistalled sound driver and reinstalled
3) even uninstalled all sound codecs and reinstalled
4) I tried to restore the system to a time it was working fine, several
times, and it would go thru the process but then state that it could not be
restored and nothing had changed.

I have googled but not found anything relevant and am thinking that I must
reinstall the O/S

Can any one give me anything else to try before I do that drastic move

In addition to the things in the other replies,
A. Most Speaker Systems have an on/off switch. Is it switched on?
B. Check the the Cables. Unplug each end from the jack and re-connect.
C. My Speakers have an independent volume control mounted on one of the
speakers. How about yours?
