No sound

Hi,

I have no sound... no system sounds, and nothing plays on media player... I
would appreciate help on this... been trying to resolve this for days now...
and have tried many different things to solve this problem on my own...from
the very obvious to not so obvious (to me anyway)..

Volume is not muted and everything is either half way up or all the way up

In Sounds and Audio devices in control panel.. my sound card is selected.

No conflicts or errors listed in device manager
My driver is listed (properties says it's working properly)
no other drivers are listed!

One website said it might be a corrupted OS.. so I repaired it.. still no
sound

Took the speakers to my friends house and connected them to her speaker,
they work fine.. and yes they are connected to the right plug on the back of
my computer.. it's all color coded.. so I know which hole to plug it
into..:)

It was suggested I see if my sound card is enabled in bios but don't know
how to do this.. I can get to bios but..

Appreciate any help I receive... thanks Rainy.

Ps.. my friend and I think it might be a bad port.. is there a way to test
the port online?

You say nothing plays on media player. Does media player open when you
insert a CD?

I just tried this.. no it sure doesn't...:) Rainy

:) I am aware that there is media player 11.. I don't care for it... Now
my printer is not installed and won't install.. could this be ports? I
would appreciate some "technical advice"... There are some awesome techs in
the group who would know just what the problem is.. since the speakers and
the printer now are giving me trouble.. I'm still thinking it could be
ports... but my knowledge in this area is limited.. very limited... Please
help.. I have no other way to figure this out.. can't afford to take it to a
computer shop.. :) appreciate any advice... if it's ports .. some info on
how to replace them would be very helpful.. thanks Rainy
Media Player 11 DOES exist, I'm just not sure you have tried downloading it

Hello,

You've already done many obvious checks and the only one more I can think of
is to use different speakers (such as head/ear phones) and see whether that
works.

I understand that you have tested your speakers in another location, but it
would not hurt to try :)

Also make sure that you are controlling the correct volume:

Volume Controller > Options > Properties > CHECK Playback > TICK ALL Boxes
below > OK

Volume Controller > Options > CHECK Advanced Controls

Any Advanced buttons coming out? If so, click them and UNCHECK any 'digital
output only' or something along the lines of that.

Just wanted to add that I managed to uninstall my printer driver and it's
installed now.. so that has to be a separate issue... :)

thanks so much for wanting to help... yes I have tried other speakers on my
computer. and followed along with your suggestions... everything was
ticked.. the only thing I couldn't do was
"Any Advanced buttons coming out? If so, click them and UNCHECK any 'digital
output only' or something along the lines of that"
I could not find digital output only. but will continue to look for it..
No one has addressed the question of ports..is that not possible? thanks
Rainy

I think I left something off, sorry! .. my sound is onboard.. Asus is the
name of the motherboard, and Soundmax is the name of the sound card... I
didn';t find a utility .. I did a search for soundmax and came up empty
handed, and went to control panel for audio and sounds.. but everything
looks fine... thanks for responding.. If I have a utility where would it be?
I can tell you this is very frustrating.. :) Rainy
message Hello,

Yes the ports malfunctioning is a possibility.

Also check to see whether you have any audio utilities that came with your
sound card and if so, fiddle with them :)

thanks... no sound max in control panel.. I went to the link where the
drivers were, but it was pretty confusing .. so many to choose from! and I
remembered I had it on cd so reinstalled it.. still no sound! here's my
question.. if the port is bad.. how do I determine this.. is there a way to
scan my ports online.. and if it turns out to be a bad port.. are there
instructions somewhere on how to replace it.. I'm not going to be replacing
it.. my friend will do this.. She's more informed about hardware.. but not
sure she has ever done this.. so... any help appreciated.. thanks so much,
Rainy

message Hello,

Look in Control Panel for any item containing the name of SoundMax.

You might also want to download the latest drivers for your model.

Hello,

If the port is bad, you will have to claim warranty on your motherboard if
it is still under warranty.

Otherwise, you can buy any cheap $20 sound card and use it.

With regards to repairing and verifying whether it is the port that is
damaged, I am unable to assist you there.

Oh, and you may also want try and nudge the connection abit and see whether
it goes through.

HI. you know I have given this a lot of thought.. and it doesn't make sense
to me.. :) why would I be told that the device is working properly.. and
that the driver is installed and the sound card is enabled if it's NOT
working properly.. wouldn't I get some sort of a prompt from Windows XP.. AN
EXCLAMATION POINT IN device manager..?? something??? I'm beginning to think
it might be a registry problem... And wouldn't Aida 32 say something in the
report that indicates that the sound is not working.. I know that there is
not a registry entry for every single thing, but...If I have to replace my
motherboard, ok.. but what if it's not that and I go to the expense of doing
that, and find it's still not working.. ? If you or anyone can think of
anything else.. I will appreciate it very much.. :) believe me, I will be
forever grateful! thanks.. Rainy

message Hello,

You're welcome - please post back on the working resolution (to this thread
if possible). Good luck!

Hello,

Windows has no way of knowing if the port is damaged.

Think of it this way - if your casing is scratched, Windows has no way of
knowing that either. That is what *might* be happening with your port

Also, you don't have to replace your motherboard - you can add-on a PCI
sound card (or a USB one, more expensive).

Note that I stress on the word *might*, as I am not entirely sure that it is
the port that it is causing the problem - you may want to search around or
ask in other forums for more opinions.
