I have XP Home SP/2 with a Linksys BEFSR41 version 2 router with latest
firmware dated August 2004. I keep getting disconnected for a split second
and it comes back on. It could be 10 minutes or a half hour and then
disconnects. I tried the Networking Troubleshooter for Sporadic disconnects
and came up with winsock corruption and did all the fixes but that didn't
help.

I called Linksys and they said to change the MTU's from 1500 to 576 and that
didn't help.

It has to be the router cause when I disconnect the router and connect
directly to my cable modem, it works fine and no disconnects.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ed.

Could the power to your router be "dirty". This sort of transient
dropout can certainly occur with power glitches to a standalone
switch, and might also occur with a cable router..

How do you determine that? I have a friend with the same router and he is
having the same problem.

Follow up on what I have found so far:

It worked fine before SP/2. After SP/2 it disconnects often like in ten
minutes or maybe in an hour. I removed SP/2 for two days and haven't had one
disconnect. I am going to install it again today and I am sure the
disconnects will be back.

Anyone know what it is with SP/2 or with Linksys that is causing this. I am
going to call Linksys but I have called them in the past and never got much
help from them. I wanted to post here first to see what anyone would
suggest.

Thanks,
Ed.

Have you followed the thread a little further "up" about (slightly
different) problems with the same router? If not, you probably should
look at it. Title is "Cable Internet Connection Problems".

Yes, I have been following that one. I used the Linksys Live Chat last night
(Weds. 10-20-04 around 7:00 PM. He had me try changing the default IP
Address of the router from 192.168.1.1 to 10.10.10.1. Then reboot the
computer and power off and on the router.

I did that and I am writing this Thurs. 10-21-04 12:30 PM and have been
online since last night and so far not a disconnect. Keeping my fingers
crossed that it will continue.

I asked him what does changing the IP Address going to do? He said it
prevents conflicts between the router and the modem. So, will see what
happens and will post back either way if it helps or not.
