dialup window comes up when on a LAN?

DotCom

Hello,
I am trying to help a friend who is on DSL "Always On" connection through a
LAN.
When she opens her IE instead of just automatically connecting and getting
on the net like it always did, it now brings up a dial-up windows and says
she
is working off line and would like to go online. She closes that window and
it says that she is off line and the same dial up window comes up and won't
let her connect as usual. What is causing this?
TIA

Open Internet Explorer - Tools - Internet Options - Connections - place a
check in "Never Dial" and this should fix the issue. A good thorough scan
of her system for Viruses might as well be in order.

Please post exact messages, not your interpretation of them.
Also, please always disclose the OS involved when asking
for assistance.

I suspect you are seeing the Work Offline/Try Again dialog
which is quite common for DSL users. Usually it is sufficient
for them just to click on Try Again. Clicking on Work Offline
would set the Work Offline option (e.g. as seen as a check in
the File menu) and would result in a message closer to the one
that you are reporting. That symptom apparently can be changed
by making changes in the DSL software, etc.

You may find PPPoE a useful search term for researching this further. E.g.

<title>KB298800 - Many PPPoE Clients from Third-Party Vendors
May Not Operate Properly or Be Installed in Windows XP</title>

Good luck
