dialog box sizes and more...

On my XP Home SP2 PC, the sizes of the icons, dialog boxes, icon spacing,
taskbar/start button size, etc. are much, much larger than normal. Not sure
what caused this, but I cannot seem to get them back to normal. For example,
the Active Title Bar is suppose to be set to size 18 w/ a font of Tahoma at
size 8.....but I cannot get the size of the Active Title Bar to go below 29.
It stops there and won't let me decrease it any further. What can I do to
get my screen back to its normal appearance? I've tried System Restore, and
no help. Thanks for any help.

1. Make sure your screen resolution is correct. Start-Control
Panel-Display-Settings. Use the slider to adjust resolution, click the Color
Quality arrow box and set to 32 bit color. Click Apply / OK.
2. To set dialog box font size, Start-Control Panel -Display -Advanced-Font
size-Advanced.
3. To set icon size, Start-Control Panel Display-Settings-Advanced-General
4. To Internet Explorer font types and sizes, right click IE desktop icon,
Properties-General-Fonts.

Hope this helps

The resolution is correct and I have been thru all of the advanced settings
under the appearance tab of display settings in control panel, and cannot get
it fixed. It will not accept the size settings that I enter into it. Any
more ideas??

Have you tried a system restore to a time just before the problem
occurred?

Jeff,

If you're using a 3rd party Theme, or if the current theme reads as
"Modified Theme" or "Windows XP (modified), try switching to Windows XP
Theme. The Appearance settings should revert to default values.

I have tried setting the Themes back to the original XP theme and even the
Windows classic theme, and there is no change.

I tried a System Restore, but there are no restore points available for me to
go back to.

If this problem is seen only in your user profile, then try this:

1. Login to another user account, and then export the following registry
key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

To export the settings to a REG file, type this in Start, Run:

reg export "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop" c:\desk_settings.reg

2. Then login to the subject user account, and then type this in Start, Run:

reg export "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop"
c:\desk_settings_orig.reg

Then, type:

C:\desk_settings.reg

When you see this prompt, click "Yes".

Registry Editor
---------------------------
Are you sure you want to add the information in c:\desk_settings.reg to the
registry?
---------------------------
Yes No
---------------------------

Logoff/login back for the changes to take effect.
