I had this running last week - but after rebuilding my machine (#2) - I can't get it up again - bad case of brain lock!
I have two XP machines wired together via a switch.
I have never had any luck with the various setup wizards - it seem that I always need to set everything up manually...
Machine # 1 has a modem - which I am trying to share with machine #2 - so that I can access the internet via machine #1.
Machine #1 = 192.168.0.1 and Machine #2 = 192.168.0.2 > each manually configured.
I can access each machine's shared files and I can ping each machine from a command line.
On machine #2 I can ping 66.218..71.94 (yahoo) - and bring it up in IE - but I can't access anything with a WWW. prefix.
"If your client can see your host machine but can't get out to the Internet you might try a ping test and then tell the client machine to use the host as DNS if you have not already.
Ping the host machine from start]run]cmd (or command). In the DOS window type: ping 192.168.0.1 or whatever your host machine is set. If you get a reply, it can see your host machine. NOW ping an external web site like this: ping www.yahoo.com -- if you get a reply, you should also be able to see it in your browser, if you don't, then ping the IP# directly, at this writing: ping 66.218.71.94. IF you NOW get a reply, you have a DNS thing to fix bud. You should also be able to see the site in your browser: http://66.218.71.94 should bring up yahoo.com
You should go to the DNS settings in your Network Properties and "Enable DNS" then type in the name of the host machine, leave domain blank, and add the IP number of your host machine, typically: 192.168.0.1."
At this point - I'm lost................I can't remember what I did the last time to get it working - despite numerous changes and experiments...
