cannot ping XP from W98 in home network

In my two computer network, I cannot reach one of the
computers from the other computer. Who can you help me ?

I have a network concisting of :
· a portable computer running Windows 98 SE
4.10.2222A, name: DELL
· a desktop computer running Windows XP
Professional version 5.1 Build 2600 (version 2002 SP 1),
name: geertp4

The network adapters of the computers are connected by a
crossed UTP cable.
DELL has a 3Com Megahertz 10/100 LAN Cardbus PC Card,
ethernet. I configuerd the TCP/IP settings of the adapter
to automatically obtain a IP adress. Geertp4 has a
onboard Intel PRO/100 VE network adapater. TCP/IP is set
up to use IP adres 192.168.0.1, subnetmask 255.255.255.0.

I have run the XP Network Setup Wizard on both computers.
Geertp4 is the host that should share its internet
connection. DELL is the client. Both use the workgroup
WAAGEN.

After first starting up geertp4 and then dell the result
is:

On DELL:
I can ping the IP adresses 192.168.0.1 (geertp4) and
192.168.0.125.
However in the network Neighbouhood, only the Dell and
its shared folders are shown.
When I use the command \\geertp4 I get the message " The
networkname cannot be found.".
Using \\192.168.0.1 results in a window with the shared
files and folders of geertp4. After this using \\geertp4
does also result in a window with the shared files and
folders of geertp4. All file and folder permissions are
OK.

On geertp4:
A ping to 192.168.0.1 works OK, a ping to 192.168.0.125
result in time out, also after ping -w10000.
In the Windows exporer after choosing View Workgroup
Computers I can see both Dell and geertp4. Doubleclicking
Dell gives the error "\\Dell is not accessible. You might
not have permission ot use this network resource. Contact
..... The networkpath was not found." The harddisk of
Dell is shared with access type full and no password
required.
Whether or not the internet connection is active does not
make a difference.

From what I can see, everything here looks OK. The problems you are
reporting sound like they are DNS specific since you can se e folders and
shares by IP address of the server.

From "geertp4", can you do \\192.168.0.125 and see the shares?

The only thing I can think to do is opening a command box on the Dell (and
possibly "geertp4") and typing

Ipconfig /flushdns a

And see if that helps.

Do you have the LAN Connection on the XP box firewalled
with the XP Firewall? It can prevent ping even if the box
can be connected to. I had a client with a similar issue
using a Linksys router, and after pulling all my hair out
trying to find out why the ping was timing out, I happened
to notice that the LAN was listed as 'firewalled' in the
network connection settings. Turning off the firewall
allowed me to ping the box, but the client decided they'd
rather deal with not being able to ping, and have the
firewall turned on. Might not be your issue, but
something to look at, just in case.
