Dial-up and Cable Do Not Work

A weird happening for both my cable and dial-up connections. After setting
up my computer [Windows 2000] with a new Linksys router for testing purposes,
and then returning to my old Linksys router, I cannot get on my Comcast cable
nor can I do AOL dial-up. I even cannot connect directly between my Comcast
modem made my Sony laptop [without the router]. Is there a common problem
here between my dialup and cable?

My Local Area Connection reads: Speed: 100Mbps, Sent 3 packets, Received 0
packets, Status: Connected.

General Tab: TCP/IP is the only box checked, and when I click on its
Properties, Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address
automatically are the only radial boxes indicated.

The Advanced box has DHCP Enabled as the only thing showing for IP Address.
Nothing shows in the Gateway box.

For the Connect using under the General tab, the Network Everywhere Fast
Ethernet 10/100 PC Card is correct, and when I click its Configure, it says
under Device Status, “This device is working properly.â€

The above is my Comcast cable connection, and I am connected directly to the
Comcast modem. I turned my Comcast modem off and then on, and also reversed
my Ethernet cable. Nothing. Comcast suggests I buy another Ethernet card.

HOWEVER, when I try dial-up on my AOL, I still cannot get an outside
connection. I get dial tone, but it stops halfway through the connect
procedure. I contacted AOL for suggestions, but their help still cannot get
connections.

My gut tells me I somehow messed up a connection common to the two methods
of dialup and cable Internet connection. Is it IE 6.0? Did I screw up the
Registry?

In any case I am looking for suggestions as to how to troubleshoot this
problem [or should I just buy another Ethernet card for my Sony laptop?]

From a command prompt;
ipconfig /all
and compare with what your ISP thinks you should have.
