DHCP server giving Static addresses

Tom

I currently work for a mid sized company that uses a
static addressing scheme. We would like to change to
using DHCP but our main proprietry software requires us to
always have the same IP address associated with the same
PC (mac address). My question is, can DHCP be set up to
compare the MAC address of the requesting machine to a
database and always return the same IP address to a
certain client. This way when we need to make any changes
such as DNS or Gateways we would not have to visit each
and every workstation. Also if we needed to change a PC's
address we could make the change in the database and
reboot it and everything would be fine. If anyone has
done this in the past please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

You can use dhcp reservations within a dhcp scope to reserve an IP address for a
particular mac address. However you can not edit a reservation. If the address needs
to change you will need to delete it and recreate it with the new IP address and same
mac address. I believe the computer should pick up the new info after a reboot, but
have not tried that myself with a reservation change so you want to tests that out
first to see if it works the way you need it to. The link below may be helpful. ---
