DHCP Problem

J

John

We recently upgraded our network to Win2K. Our previous
PDC, now a BDC and still running NT4, is currently the
DHCP server. When I disable the DHCP service on this
machine and start the service on the Win2K server, none
of the client computers can renew their IP address. The
DHCP service is authorized by the AD and has the same
scope as the previous one.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Are you sure the new win2k server is getting the DHCP packets? You can
verify this by sniffing the traffic at the win2k server (eg: netmon). You
might have to configure your routers (DHCP relay agents) to forward the DHCP
traffic to the new win2k machine.

If the server is authorized, you get the green arrow by the server name.
The scope however still could be in an unactivated state. right click the
scope and click on activate ( if this is the case ).

Otherwise I suggest sniffing your network interface and verifying that the
DHCP Discovers are being received. you can actually verify the complete
DHCP process

DHCP Discover ( comes from the client )
DHCP Offer ( sent from the server )
DHCP Request ( comes from the client )
DHCP ACK / NACK ( sent from the server )

you can sniff on the client as well and verify the same info ( from this
view you'd verify the server packets are being received )
