Dfs root replication - yet another question!

Chris Warwick

Flushed with my success from following Jill's tip on fixing my unwanted
morphed Dfs folder I'm prompted to ask another couple of questions. I'll
use seperate threads to avoid confusion - here's the first question:

I had initially (incorrectly) enabled FRS replication on my Dfs Root folder
- I've now stopped FRS from replicating the root and I'm just replicating
the individual links. However, I still have a
"DO_NOT_REMOVE_NtFrs_PreInstall_Directory" folder in my Dfs Root folder.
Since I'm no longer replicating content into the Dfs Root can I remove this
folder? If so, how?

Each of the individual links/shares within the Dfs Root have their own
PreInstall directory - so I'm guessing the one in the root isn't required -
is this correct?

Thanks
Chris

Chris, I believe these are protected system folders. Have you tried using
the attrib command to change the attributes so that you can delete the
folder? If you are no longer replicating that folder, it should be safe to
remove this because each replica root has its own preinstall folder.

Also, here is the definition of these folders:

A hidden subfolder under the root of the replica tree. When a newly created
file or folder is replicated to a downstream partner, the file or folder is
first created in the preinstall folder. After the file or folder is
completely replicated, it is renamed to its target location in the replica
tree. This process is used so that partially constructed files are not
visible in the replica tree.

OK, it's gone... no signs of anything falling apart yet! I had to change
the security attributes on the folder (-> Admin Full Control) so I could
delete it but otherwise no issues. I'm sure there won't be any problem but
will let you know if I spot anything unusual!

Thanks,
Chris
