Device Groups in Device Manager Gone!

Hi there,

This is an interesting one. I am a tech in MT and have been working on a
Machine that is having some interesting problems. When you go to the device
manager, all the really important devices are gone from the list, i.e. Sound
Card, Network Cards, Graphic adapters, USB Controllers, Mouse, Keyboard, etc.
If you refresh, nothing, and if you remove a device, it stays gone. I have
also gone to the display properties in hope of being able to change the
driver under that tab, but it won't let me do it and it reports that VGA Save
is the graphics adapter which appears to be some sort of safety device in
case of driver issues. I have tried installing a new chipset driver from VIA
and it poops out before the install. I have tried system restores without
luck, either. Also, if you go in and try and view network devices in the
network area, there is nothing there, either. I have scanned the PC for
viruses/spyware with adaware, spybot, ewido, windows defender, e'scan, as
well as numerous other scanners, nothing helps. I have performed a repair
install of windows which didn't help either. I would like to avoid a format
and reload. Does anyone know of a registry hack I could perform or even a
specific DLL that may need re-registering? Thanks for your help. Oh BTW, It
is a system running Windows XP Home SP2. There you have it.
