Are you starting the Vista install DVD from your desktop, that is, running
your current Operating System and the starting the installation? Or are you
installing by booting into the DVD?

The usual reason is that your C: is fully occupied by an earlier version of
Windows which was installed on a FAT32 filesystem instead of NTFS.

You have choices. You can convert your existing FAT filesystem to NTFS
before installing Vista. You can shrink the FAT partition to make room
for a new Vista partition, but only if your C: has plenty of unused space
remaining.

What do you have in C: now?
