Detecting HP T65 Office Jet through USB / Install new hardware pop

Hi
This is driving me nuts. I have an HP T65 'all in one' office jet printer
and a (newish) Toshiba Laptop (less than 2 yrs old) running Win XP. I have
downloaded and installed T65 drivers for XP. I have replaced the parrellel
connection cable from the printer with a USB connection as the laptop does
not have a parrellel port.

The first time I installed the printer drivers only the printer drivers
installed (and I printed a successful test page), so I uninstalled and
re-installed drivers to try and get the scan and fax drivers as well, which
appears to have worked as I have the HP Office Manager desktop shortcut
available.

Now, having reinstalled the drivers when I plug in the USB connection the
computer 'chimes' to indicate a new piece of hardware, but the 'install new
hardware' pop-up does not pop up, and trying to manually detect the printer
through the 'install new hardware' in control panel does not work as it does
not detect the printer.

USB Printing Support has appeared in the Device Manager pane under system
properties.

The problem appears to be the 'install new hardware' now does not pop-up
after plugging in the printer, and I can't get the damn unit installed by
going through the hardware detection route - yet the first time I went
through the process it detected and I was able to install the printer.

Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Did you connect this all-in-one to your laptop prior to installing the
accompanying software? You must install the software/drivers before
connecting it and turning it on. During this process you will be prompted
when to connect it and when to turn it on.

Yes, installed software prior to and connected printer when prompted to.
Rebooted computer as instructed in order for it to detect the new hardware
but that did not bring up the 'new hardware' process either. Have tried
reinstalling three times now, and still although the computer chimes when
plugging the USB cable in, the 'new hardware' pop-up does not pop-up.

Update - I have just restarted and this time the laptop detected the
hardware, so went through the install process and have installed the printer,
which is the main issue out of the way. However, even though I can now print,
when I try to use the scan, or fax or email functions via the office jet
manager, it tells me the pc is not communicating with the office jet.
Likewise if I try to scan a document on the office jet it says I am not
connected to the pc - yet I have installed the printer and can print
documents.

Any further help or hints would be much appreciated.

Hi. I have the same problem with a HP 1300 using USB. Under
controlpanel/system/check out the IEEE1284.4 connection - you will
probably find your printer there. But apparently Vista can not attach
a proper driver to a 1284.4 device. Through HP chat-service I
received the following link:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software8/COL17364/dj-46093-3/HP_Vista_SF_Ph1.exe
This program appears to correctly install the USB DOT4 port used for
USB printing - but on my system (Vista Home Premium) it does not work.

So, like you, I wait for a solution from the web/and/or HP support.
If you find a solution, pls let me know.
