Desperate for Help: windows xp missing/corrupt files, can't repair

My windows xp home edition will not start. i get an
error message that the file is missing or corrupt -
\windows\system32\config\system. I've tried to repair
the file, but hitting r does not do anything. I've also
inserted the xp disc but it doesn't seem to be copying
the file or reading from the cd. I've gone into setup
and have the cd rom checked off for 1st boot, but still
no luck.

Please Help, I'm desperate!!!
