All of the other icons on my desktop are covered by the
internet "e " symbol. I have tried to change the icons

This is probably unrelated to Active Directory.

You might do better asking on a newsgroup targeted at your
client operating system???

A frequent cause of this is a corrupted ShellIconCache file
so by searching for that term on the Microsoft support site
or on Google you will find various KB (knowledge base)
articles describing various fixes.
