Desktop With No Icons

When starting up my computer I get to the Windows Start-up Screen fine. As
Windows starts to load I see the scrolling bars move across, sometimes
hesitating. Then my screen goes black for approx. 10-20 minutes. Eventually
I get to the sign-on screen, of which I am the only user. When I click my
name to continue the screen goes black again and eventually comes up to my
desktop background with no icons or task bar. I do have pointer which
sometimes momentarily turns to an hourglass. My computer has been in this
state for over 8hrs. It seems as if something is bogging it down. I am able
to start-up in safe mode with no trouble. In Safe Mode I have run Ad-aware
and Spy-bot and have found no problems. I have also opened Task Manager and
saw no obvious applications or processors bogging me down. I have the
WindowsXP Home version and also run Norton's Antivirus protection. I hope
I've provided you with enough information for you to help me. Thanks

Right click in the Desktop. In the popup take the Arrange Icons by, and
click on Show Desktop Icons so it is checked
