Desktop Web Icons--Where'd They Go?

Used to be (with XP) that when I drag and drop a web address icon from
the address bar to the desktop, the trademark icon for that site would
appear on my desktop. Not so for Vista, in which I'm getting only the
generic windows explorer icon with a graphic that looks like the old
Win3.1 desktop.

Is there any way to get that XP feature going in Vista? I want my
pretty desktop bouquet of icons back--dammit!

Those specialized icons are called favicons and IIRC they don't exist in
Vista. I'm not an IE expert but I Googled for "no favicons Vista" and
one of the sites had this explanation:

"If Vista, the problem is likely due to UAC. We store the favicon data
for internet sites in the low integrity level cache. Explorer (which
includes the Start menu and task bar) run in the Medium integrity level,
which means they don't have access to the low cache (that would be a
security risk)."

Someone else may have a more definitive answer for you, but you might
want to post in the IE7 newsgroup here:

Well, shoot! You'd think there'd be some kind of work-around for
those who find the graphical advantage worth the risk. In any case, I
certainly appreciate this information on the subject. "favicons", eh?

V paste command does not work on my new Toshiba laptop when I've got
it USB'd to an external keyboard, but does work on the laptop

Thanks for your kind words. I really do need to update CountingSpoons
one of these days.

Unfortunately, the Empress doesn't know the answer to your question. I
would first try a different external keyboard; the one you have may have
a bad Control key or may just not play nice with the Toshiba. If a
different keyboard doesn't make a difference, then I'd put it down to
Toshiba keyboard driver weirdness that only comes out in that particular
situation. Sorry that I wasn't able to give you a more definitive answer.

Thanks, you've inspired me to at least put it on my To Do list. If only
I could do a Time Turner thing like Hermione in the Harry Potter book
and be in two places at once. Or even three. ;-)

Hi Mackie,

Did you take a look at this yet? It will show you a couple of methods
on how to create a Internet Desktop Shortcut in Vista that will keep
it's icon and not the generic IE7 E icon.

Hey! Okay, I tried the desktop right-click to View -> Classic Icons
and immediately I got my trusty ol' Google and MsHotmail favicons.
Shazaam! There they were in a flash. But the YouTube (among most of
the others) was still dead, so I had to make a shortcut from YouTube
on the links bar (where all the favicons do faithfully appear), then
drag and drop that to the desktop. No such luck for the Blogger,
however, as not even using "Send to" from the favorites right-click
menu worked to produce the trademark favicon on my desktop--though it
does appear in the menu. I tried Blogger's own right-click menu for
sending it to my desktop. A "properties" screen appeared with the
favicon displayed, but after the "okay" click, nothing appeared.

It may well be, as I have not yet tried all the other options. You put
me off to great start, however, so . . .
