desktop shrunk

i logged into an XP pc as administrator to install some new software. When
the user logged back into the PC the desktop icons had all moved to a smaller
are on the top left hand side of the scree. The icons were still usable but i
wondered how this could have happened, it is as though the desktop shrinks to
a smaller size of the screen.

Icons simply relocated due to the temporary lower resolution.
