Desktop Shortcut Icons Disappear

G

Guest

Hi,

What would cause desktop shortcut icon's to disappear? The user has set
them to be a custom icon, and everything was fine, then they disappeared.

I have "reset" the IconCache by increasing the icon size by 1 point and
getting windows to re-do the cache - (Display properties, Appearance,
Advanced, Icon from the dropdown, size +1) - the icons all come back and all
is fine, but then around 3 hours later they are gone again.

Could the icon cache be full? Should I increase its size? What else could
be causing this?

The machine is a brand new - high spec machine.

Thanks

Ian

Hello Ian,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, I am not sure why the shortcut icons missing. You may try
to create a new user account and boot into Clean Boot mode to monitor the
issue.

Hi

Icons have all been created by following KB 310192
But machine now says "shell32.dll" does not contain any icons.
Until it is rebooted and then it seems to be fine for a while.
I've looked in the Eventvwr and nothing seems to be raised in the system log
or application log which seems appropriate to indicate a problem.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your response.

Could you let us know the exact error message?

Also please test to see if the issue still occurs in Safe Mode. If the
issue occurs in the Safe Mode, please perform the following steps to run
System File Checker. To verify if some system files are corrupted, also
please run System File Checker (SFC).
1. Click on Start, click on Run and type "CMD" (without the quotation
marks). Press Enter. This opens the Command Prompt window.
2. Type "SFC" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter. It lists the
option you can choose. You can then choose an option, such as "SFC
/scannow" (without the quotation marks). Press Enter.
Note: You will be prompted to insert the Windows XP SP2 CD, do so.

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

Hi Ken,

I will do a SFC next time I get physical access to the machine.
However I just wanted to add that I created a test icon on the desktop
pointing to a freshly copied DLL (in my documents subfolder) and this custom
icon was also lost with all the others. It happened today after the machine
was on for around 2 hours. So I think that it's not something about
Shell32.dll per se, rather a resource issue or the like.

So to recap - the desktop shortcut icons which have been created with custom
icons, do not display correctly. Today when it happened the machine was
rebooted immediately and the icons then displayed correctly.

Besides the SFC, is there any other lines of investigation I can follow ?

The machine also has the problem with desktop icons not having transparent
text on the icons. No matter what settings are set - the machine refuses to
allow transparent text on the icons, so picture desktop wallpaper looks
horrible with icons with text the same colour as the windows backgorund not
the picture. No matter which user logs in this happens for them and in safe
mode too.

Is there any "reset to default" for icons/desktop that I can do ? (for all
users)

Thanks in advance.

Ian

Hi Ian,

Based on my knowledge, there is no direct way to reset default desktop
icons. If the SFC cannot help, you may try to repair Windows XP.

For more detail about repair installation, please refer to link below:
KB315341: How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
