Desktop Icons will not stay as ordered

I recently did a manual cleanup of the icons on my desktop (WinXP sp2).
Some were deleted some were moved, etc. I decided to rearrange most of the
icons left to a certain order. After placing them in the order I wanted I
selected Auto Arrange from the desktop to make sure they were all centered
correctly. Now they will not stay as placed. If I bring up Explorer and
then close it, the icons will be arranged completely different than the way
I placed them. I tried this with Auto Arrange on and off. It doesn't seem
to make any difference. I tried running the icon repair from TweakUI and
all it diod was rearrange the icons. Funny the icons stayed as placed
before I performed a manual cleanup.
And FWIW, I have all the icons on the left side of screen and not spread
out. They simply change their order.
Any way to fix this?

Don't use auto arrange. That auto arranges them. Use align to grid to
make sure they are centered. Also use this tweak from Kelly's site to
create a right click menu item to save an restore, if need be, the icon
layout.

thanks I'll give it a try. FWIW, I mentioned that the problem occured
either with or without auto arrange. Not sure what got screwed up.

I missed the part about without auto arrange. Sometimes it just happens
that icons get rearranged. I have found that tweak from Kelly's site to
be great.

Well I tried that little app. It seems to work ok but not fully. After I
click Retore Desktop Icons they arrange almost where I saved it ecept it
leave a few gaps. Those gaps cause the icons to all not restore to proper
locations.
