desktop icons superimposed with magnifying glass

A couple of weeks ago suddenly (most of) my desktop icons now have a
magnifying glass (with a piece of 'paper') superimposed on them. Windows
Apps (media player), other apps e.g. Winfax, notepad docs etc. Everything
seems to be working normally. When I create a new shortcut the mag glass
appears over the normal icon. I fear that I'm heading toward a Windows
meltdown.

I haven't used TweakUI in quite a while but older versions (at least) had
the ability to change the look of the shortcut overlay. Maybe if you use
TweakUI and turn the overlay off (or change it to something else) and then
set it back to the default it'll kick Windows in the butt.

Or (also in TweakUI) click on Repair on the left pane and select Rebuild
Icons.
