Hello, All
[Just wanted to share this, in case anybody's got the same problem:]

XP Annoyance: Desktop shortcut icons that kept reappearing on one
specific user's desktop, even after being deleted.

Unsuccessful Steps Taken:
1] Rt-click on icon, delete. (Shortcut would delete w/ no problem,
then reappear
after computer had been restarted, or started fresh from complete
shutdown.
2] Take ownership of icon, then delete. No help. I even made sure that
there was
only one owner of the shortcut file, then deleted it. Didn't matter.
3] Booted into Safe Mode as administrator, went to respective user's
Docs and
Settings > Desktop folder, and deleted icons from there. No help. They
came back.
4] Made sure that the problem icons were not present in All Users
Desktop folder.
(They weren't.)
5] Even though the three icons in question were from respectable apps,
I performed
thorough anti-virus and -spyware scans with several good programs. No
help.
6] Went into the three programs that 'owned' the icons (i.e., Xara X,
Weather
Exchange, and Catalog Max), and confirmed that there were no settings
involved that
were telling the apps to show shortcuts on the desktop. There were
not.

What Finally Worked:
Guessing that the problem was rooted in a userprofile setting, I went
to:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/
details.aspx?familyid=1b286e6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&displaylang=en

and downloaded a MSoft program called "User Profile Hive Cleanup
Service", and installed it.
Worked like a flippin' charm [:-D
