Desktop icons lost after screensaver operation

My screensaver (Windows XP default) comes on after 10 minutes of inactivity.
When I then move the mouse, my background reappears, but all icons, including
the start button and menu at the bottom right of the screen do not reappear.

I have to reboot to get these things back. Does anyone have any ideas what
is causing this and how to fix it?

Try F5 to refresh the screen.
