desktop icon removal

Richard

I have 3 desktop icons that I am unable to remove. Get a
msg to confirm that I want to remove this icon and when I
say to 'delete shortcut', I get a circled X window: "Error
deleting file or folder" which says "Cannot delete file:
access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-
protected and that the file is not currently in use."
I have two shortcut icons that won't delete and one icon
for a "Desktop.ini" file that won't delete. I have tried
everything I know how to do. Any Ideas on what I might
try? Thankyou in advance.

in use. do ctrl, alt, delete and close any programs or
processes which sound anyfin like the name of the icon.

The icons are for programs that I have long since removed
and I really expected the removal to also remove the
shortcuts but they were left on the desktop. The programs
are AOL6.0 and Market Monitor from Option Investor. I
don't remember how I deleted the basic programs, control
panel add/remove, or a delete from explorer but however I
did it, it didn't do the complete job. This is the first
time I have ever had a problem like this. It isn't really
hurting anything to have them on the desktop, just a total
annoyance.

Hi,

Start/run regedit, navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Deskto
p\NameSpace

Look below it at the subkeys to see if one corresponds to the unwanted
icons. Delete just that subkey to remove the icon.

Rick: Thanks for your help. I checked the Registry key
and found only one key that pertained to AOL and deleted
that but it was my current Version 9.0 AOL dekstop icon.
No harm done, just restored that. I tried to delete
the .lnk files in DOS but get "access denied", and files
show no attributes are set. Any more ideas???

Rick: Still no good. Can't take control of these icon
files. Works same in Safe and Normal modes. The
properties tab for these files is stuck on "shortcut" and
will not let me change to any other tab.
