Desktop gone/ran FixBlast and patch

Deborah

Hi, everyone - I posted late last night about how we seem
to have the shut down problem under control....we have
followed so many helpful links posted here to get the
patch(es), download/run FixBlast, etc...though we are not
getting shut down now, we still are not getting our
desktop. This also means we can not access Control Panel
to save any files...someone suggested we type "control"
(without quotes) in Task Manager (Task Manager is what we
are using to open anything since we don't have desktop),
but it won't work; point is, we can't enable the firewall
without the control panel (at least not that we know
of). We have tried numerous times to run FixBlast but it
gets an error message and shuts down each time in the
middle (Fixblast does, not the computer itself). So, we
can never finish Fixblast.

Here are our issues/questions...
1) Is our control panel disappearance problem part of
this latest virus or maybe something else?
2) Since we are not having the RPC message or getting
shut down, do you agree it sounds like we got rid of the
worm....or maybe just one part and the other part is
still causing the desktop disappearance issues?
3) Any other ideas for enabling our firewall since we
can't get to Control Panel?
4) Any other suggestions at all? We have tried Panda and
Norton antivirus programs, have updated throughout the
past 48 hours and nothing is showing anything else wrong
on our system at this time.

So, everything would seem alright based on having all
current updates and nothing showing up in the virus
scans....but, we still aren't getting our desktop.

Any suggestions, thoughts or ideas will be
appreciated!!! Thank you!

I had the same problem, the way to bring ur desktop back
is to, end the program explorer.exe and then run new task
and run explorer.exe. reply if that helps if not ill try
some other methods.

I could just kiss you, whoever you are! :) THANK
YOU!!!!!! We are on the right track now, I *hope*....it
worked in getting my desktop back and we were able to
enable the firewall which, for some reason (maybe it was
disabled temporarily for performing some function and we
forgot???) was disabled. I have had the problem of
Norton not letting me enable the processes it recommends
(auto, etc) since this happened, and that problem is
still there but at least we are moving forward somewhat.
Thank you, again, for your help! Our household sure
appreciates it!

I almost hate to say it for fear of jinxing us, but it
seems to all be better now....just ran virus scan again
in the folders which had been affected by the strangeness
and all was clear again. Desktop is back and all looks
good...will run an entire system scan again, but
hopefully it will come out clear, as well. Thank you
again for your help!
