I Have XP running on a ~ 2 1/2 yr. old 667 Mhz [PII(?)] custom built machine, 512 MB RAM, SoundBlaster Live sound card, and NVIDA TNT2 video card, and have a late 2003 version Norton Anti-Virus, updated as available. I frequently check for, and install, XP and other driver updates for my O/S and related hardware & drivers.
The machine had been performing satisfactorily since I got it, and since January 2003, when I updated to XP, after resolving several XP installation issues. For the last month however, after the machine awakes from hibernation or sleep mode, the desktop display backround will, regardless of previous setting(s), display either an all light blue or purple desktop backround color. Thereafter, when I go to the desktop display setting utility to change the display back to where I had it, I notice that the previous setting that I applied is still highlighted (but not displaying what it is set at). I have to select another display backround, then re-select the setting that I want displayed, and apply it, in order to switch back to what I want to see. This situation occurs consistently every time the machine awakes from the hibernate mode.
During the same time frame, my system has developed what may or may not be a related problem. I keep getting frequent "machine has recovered from a serious error" message windows, which I have been sending to Microsoft XP Troubleshooting when prompted. After the issue is analyzed by MS, the problem / solution message that is displayed is that "...(I) may need to update my drivers for my NVIDA TNT2 video card to the latest version...". I had performed this particular update when I originally updated to the XP O/S in Jan. '03, and a couple of times over the past ~ 3 months after receiving this same analysis, but the same error window still is dislpayed frequently (it seems more frequentl since I started having the display issue outlined above.
No viruses or worms appear to be present, as I have utilized TrendMicro's on-line scan and cleaning utility, and my Norton is currently up-to-date. I am at a loss to explain or discover how or why these issues have developed, why they constantly re-occurr, or how to remedy them. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
