Depleted disk space and unable to install, run, & uninstall antivirus prog

I recently upgraded to XP from ME and have been
experiencing several problems. I only have 10% free disk
space on my computer now and I am unable to uninstall my
norton anti-virus software so that I can install a newer
version (that works with XP). I have been told I might
have a worm (possibly blaster worm) but I can't seem to
find it, and FixBlast does not find it. HELP!! When I
try to install norton anti-virus, my computer just goes
back to the desktop. And when i try to remove norton anti-
virus (old ME version) it says it cannot uninstall
because "install.log" is missing.

If you upgraded to XP without cleaning up first, you may be in trouble.

As for Uninstalling Norton - Symantec has that solution:

I would suggest going through Add/Remove programs now - uninstalling what you do not need/use.
Then use Disk Cleanup :

Removing unneeded files
When running an operating system as complex as Windows, you may not always know the significance of all the files on your computer. Sometimes Windows uses files for a specific purpose and then retains them in a folder designated for temporary files. Alternatively, you may have previously installed Windows components that you are no longer using. For a variety of reasons, including running out of space on your hard drive, you may want to reduce the number of files on your disk, or create more free space, if it can be done without harming any of your programs.

Use the Windows Disk Cleanup Wizard to perform all of the following tasks to clear space on your hard disk:

a.. Remove temporary Internet files.
b.. Remove any downloaded program files (ActiveX controls and Java applets downloaded from the Internet).
c.. Empty the Recycle Bin.
d.. Remove Windows temporary files.
e.. Remove Windows components that you are not using.
f.. Remove installed programs that you no longer use.
Note

a.. To start Disk Cleanup, click Start, click Run, and then type cleanmgr.
Then I would burn or move any old files to CD that you do not need daily access to or just need to archive anyway. Defragment your drive once you get 15% free, then download/install/run/upgrade and scan with LavaSoftw AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy to kill off any spyware/adware you might have. Enable that Windows XP firewall (ICF) and keep that Antivirus software updated.

You may also want to consider buying an extra/new hard drive: http://www.pricewatch.com/menus/m26.htm

I was able to download a couple worm removal tools from
symantec and successfuly run them. I found the Welchia
worm and removed it. It freed up 6% of space. My HD is
26.9G, and I just purchased an 80Gb HD but have not
installed it yet. I have never added an internal hard
drive on XP before and am not quite sure how that works.
I understand the master/slave configuration, etc., but
don't know much else about it. Do i need to install an OS
on the additional HD? How does that work with XP?

(To both responders): Thanks so much for your help!!

If you understand the Master/Slave situation, you are almost there.
Set it up as Slave.
Boot up.
Run Disk Manager and Initialize the new drive.

1.. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
2.. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and
Maintenance.

NOTE: If you do not see Performance and Maintenance, go to step 3.
Performance and Maintenance is displayed in Control Panel only if you use
Category view. If you use Classic view, Performance and Maintenance does not
appear.
3.. Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then
in the left pane, click Disk Management

I recently upgraded from ME to XP and though I didn't
have the space problem your experiencing I did have a
problem with un-installing/re-installing norton anti-
virus. Their is a utility Rnav2003 which is available
thru their help facility which will remove the norton
software.

Hope this helps...
