Dell with XP Home Edition

I have been attempting to assist my sister who recently got a Dell 2000
series computer with XP Home Edition on it. Here is our problem. She has a
dial up internet connection and when she tries to enter a website such as
Yahoo canasta lobbies then the Java applets will not load for her and if they
do load then they boot her out almost as soon as she gets in a lobby. We
have attempted to install the Java Virtual Machine and also tried the Java
Sun. Nothing seems to be working with her dial up connection. They work
fine when she is connected to my high speed internet. I am sure that there
is some type of conflict in her dialup and the Java but can't seem to isolate
the problem. She has tried two different dial up isp's being (MSN and AOL)
and neither seems to work. Can anyone give me another suggestion of what we
might try. I am ready to reformat her harddrive and install Win 2000 on it.
lol She doesn't have high speed internet available where she is, so we have
to find a fix that will work with her dial up. Thanks in advance for any
help you can offer.

First, is you install Windows 2000 onto her Dell 2000, it may "void" the
Dell warranty.

Makes no sense to me. To run Java applets you need a Java Virtual
Machine (JVM). The up-to-date JVM can be had from
http://java.sun.com/getjava

Java doesn't know or care what kind of network connection you have.
But I don't know what you mean by "when she is connected to my
high-speed internet". Do you mean that your machine can get to these
"lobbies", and hers can't? What *exactly* happens when she tries? What
error messages appear?

I downloaded an java update that was directed to me and no i have not
installed windows 2000 on her dell computer, although i am really temped to.
when I said that it connects fine on my high speed internet is that i brought
her computer home and connected it to my high speed internet and the java ran
fine. It is only when she uses her aol dial up connection that she has
trouble getting into yahoo canasta lobbies. When she tries a yahoo java
applet then she gets a green screen and her internet seems to just stop.
Even when she tries the link that says if the applet doesn't load in 3
minutes to click here. On the rare occasion that she does get the applet to
load successfully it will boot her right back out. I gave her the link that
you provided as I am not sure if that is the same java that i downloaded and
installed. Thank you for your help.

Ah, I see.

I know just about nothing about AOL. How the network connection is
made shouldn't make any difference in running a Java applet. But maybe
AOL's dial-up connection is - umm - nonstandard, somehow? Do you know
whether any AOLers can use the canasta lobbies?

Yes aol users do get into the lobbies. I used to have AOL myself before
switching to cable internet and never had any problems. Maybe the link that
you provided will help her out. I emailed it to her so that she could try
downloading it. I don't have much experience with XP so this is new water to
me. lol All my computer training/experience has been with 2000. Thanks
for all your help. I really appreciate it. :)
