Josh

Hey, somehow my hotmail account was linked to my start
menu where it says 4 new unread messages or whatever. Is
there anyway to unlink it so that it doesn't say new
unread mail when i recieve a hotmail mail?

Select OE to appear in the start menu, if you mean the welcome screen, there
is a way to make it not show, but I'm not sure how.

Tony,

I'm sure Josh appreciates the fact that you bothered to post and say that
you didn't know how to fix the problem he was having.

I bet that when you DO know the answer, you keep it a secret. :>

One way is to download the TweakUI Powertool

(freely downloadable from here
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
)

This has an option on the Logon node for "Unread mail" which will do
precisely that.

Alternatively exporting (in case you change your mind) / deleting these 2
registry keys should remove it

(Start > run > "regedit")

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\MessageExpiryDays

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\MessageExpiryDays

Compliments of Kelly:

Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To remove an account or to change the count manually:

Start>Run>Regedit>navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]. In the right pane modify: Message Count, Change it to 0.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail. In
the right pane modify: MessageExpiryDays Change it to 0.
