It says I have one unread email in my hotmail account, but there is nothing
there. How do I reset this to zero or clear it. Thanks

Chris

Chris,

Its a registry setting that holds this & there was a coding article written
by Duncan Mackenzie for MSDN a few years back. Not sure which month/year
though - sorry!

Here's another way:

Click START
Click RUN
Type 'regedit' (without the quotes) & click OK
Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

Now delete the following subkeys in the right pane:

MessageCount
TimeStamp

Both of these keys are binary values

You can also change 'MessageExpiryDays' to '0' (zero)

That will fix your problem,

There are a couple of ways to deal with this. One is to download and run
TweakUI, one of the MS powertoys. Run it and look at the Login section.
There will be an option to remove the email count display from the Welcome
Screen or reset it. Get it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Otherwise see this MS Knowledge Base article for info on making this change
manually through the registry:
Overview of the mail notification display on the Windows XP Welcome screen
