Deleting Temporary Internet Files

Hi Everyone,

(1) My C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files Directory Shows ( Using Properties ) 27.6MB with 13 Files and 5
Folders ( Without Being Connected to the Internet ), But there are
Literally Hundreds of Cookies in there, WHY are there Cookies in
there?.

(2) My C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Cookies Directory Shows 6.51MB
with 1,560 Files and 0 Folders ( Without Being Connected to the
Internet ), with ALL of them at the End Containing [1] OR [2].

Can I Safely Delete the Cookies in Number (1), thereby Freeing Up
27.6MB of Disk Space Or is there Something I am Missing. Obviously I
Want to Leave the Cookies that Actually Work, will Deleting the Cookies
from Number (1) Affect the Cookies in Number (2)?. Which One is the
Correct Cookies Folder?.

Also in my C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Local Settings\Temp Folder
there is 2.42MB with 65 Files and 8 Folders. Some of these Temp Files
go Back to September Last Year.

I have Deleted the Temporary Internet Files ( Control Panel & Internet
Options Including Checking the Offline Box ) But ALL the Above are
Still there.

Any Help would be Greatly Appreciated.
Many Thanks.
All the Best.

These may be indices or pointers rather than actual cookies, which are
stored in a different folder under C:\Documents and
Settings\%username%\Cookies.

Perfectly normal. Dude, you have LOTS of cookies. :)

You can delete cookies at any time from within Internet Explorer
(under "Tools" General tab) or directly from the folder containing the
cookies. The first way is probably better, and it is certainly
easier.
Also in my C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Local Settings\Temp Folder

You can, and should, delete them unless they are reported as being
currently in use when you attempt to delete them.

Any Help would be Greatly Appreciated.

In addition to the foregoing, also run Disk Cleanup, which you can
find on the start menu under All Programs/Accessories/System Tools.

Thanks for the Reply Ken, Much Appreciated.
BTW, I Read Somewhere Today that it was SAFE to Delete ANY FILES AND
DIRECTORIES in the \TEMP and \WINDOWS\TEMP Directories. What is your
Opinion on this Please.

Thanks for your Help.
All the Best.

My pleasure.

As for what you read, I agree with it. The only exception is that if
you try to delete a temp file that is still in use by Windows XP --
but in that case the system won't let you delete it anyway. So,
anything in these files that you can delete at all, you can safely
delete.
