"Temporary Internet File" folder mystery

Hello,

According to IE 7 my cookies are being saved to C:\Documents and
Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\. The problem is I see
no such file when exploring my C: drive. I have a temporary internet file
folder under C:\Documents and Settings\Guest..... and C:\Documents and
Settings\Default..., but neither of them contain the cookies. I have unhidden
all files and folders and ran a search by folder name, but still can't locate
it. I have also ran a windows search by cookie names that I see in IE 7, but
can't find them. Can anyone help me solve this mystery? All best, Sean

SeanT,

Basically try this:

Open a folder | TOOLS menu | FOLDER OPTIONS | VIEW tab & show hidden files | Click APPLY |
OK

Now navigate to 'C:\Documents and Settings\[username here]\Local Settings\Temporary
Internet Files'

To find the cache location via IE, do this:

Open IE | TOOLS | INTERNET OPTIONS | GENERAL tab | SETTINGS button | VIEW FILES button

Cookies can also be held in: 'C:\Documents and Settings\[username here]\Cookies' too

Hope this helps

Thanks for the effort Newbie Coder, but the folder still doesn't show. I had
actually already unhidden all folders.

I do appreciate the reply.

What exactly is missing? Is it the c:\documents and settings\owner\local
settings\temporary internet files folder, or is it just the cookies in this
folder? If it's just the cookies, do you have cookies enabled (your IE
privacy settings will tell you this)?

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your replies. I was always aware of where the folder should
be, but it wasn't there. I found the solution on another board.

Apparently installing IE 7 created the problem and hid the folder from me
even thought I had the "unhide folders" optioned checked.

The solution was this:

1. Open any folder
2. Click "Tools"
3. Select "Folder Options"
4. Click on the "View" tab
5. Under Advanced settings, uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."

After doing this, the folders will reappear.

Thanks again everyone,
SeanT

By default, Windows hides the History, Cookies, and Temporary Internet Files
folders from Explorer. This means that you cannot view them even if you change
folder settings to view hidden/system files and folders.

This action by Windows is controlled through a registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

and the value ExcludeProfileDirs. If you go to RegEdit, locate the above key,
and clear the entry for ExcludeProfileDirs (it will contain the folder names
being hidden), you will be able to see the folders after you reboot your system.

SeanT,

I'm having a similar issue, but nothing seems to fix the issue...

Similar to you, i've been unable to view files in the following
folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files

You see, when I open explorer and right click on the actual Temporary
Internet Files folder, then select properties, it tells me there's
2,000+ items & over 900 MB of files.

No matter what I do, and i've done everything you've suggested from
top of this thread to the bottom, I can't get rid of these files which
is eating up practically a GB on this old Dell Inspiron 11000 laptop.
I KNOW I could use that hard drive space!

Please, PLEASE advise...

***For that matter, the Texas Instruments PCMCIA slot seems to have
just crapped out. Seems in fine order, but I cannot connect to the
Internet/LAN wirelessly. Everytime I insert my wireless card it
freezes up the system. I think I may have a trojan for that matter...

Thanks!!!
