size of Temporary Internet Files

About c:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files, folder info says it has12,000+ files and 50+MB. Looking in it, I see
800 files, all cookies, totalling about 1 MB. View hidden files and system
files is on. I have run a disk check.

Can anyone explain what's happening?

I'm using IE7, if that matters, and XP SP2.

There is a hidden folder in your Temporary Internet Files
folder named Content.IE5. This folder cannot be viewed by your
user account even with viewing hidden files and folders
enabled. Here are two methods you can use to view this folder.

1. Go to Start -> Run and enter the following in the Open box.

%homepath%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

2. Open your Temporary Internet Files folder.
Click in the Address bar at the top of the window so that the
address is highlighted.
Hit the right arrow key to place the cursor at the end of the
folder path.
Type \Content.IE5 in the address bar and hit Enter.
You should now see the contents of that folder

Good luck

Thanks. Yes, there's a lot of stuff in there. A quick glance through it
shows a lot of cached advertising. Is there anything else in there that's
likely to be useful?

Also, after cleaning please Hide your Files and folder by checking the box
on the folder Option >> View.

You can delete all and leave the index.dat, also you can use this tool:
http://www.ccleaner.com
Please read the help file on how to use, it can be a pain if you delete
something belonging to the system.
If you elect to delete manually, your best option to try in safe mode.

Not really.

You can delete the contents of those folders from Internet
Options.
Click on Tools on the menu toolbar of IE7.
Note: If you do not see the toolbar at the top of the window,
hold down the Alt key.
Select Internet Options from the menu.
On the General page, hit the Delete button in the Browsing
history section.
Hit the Delete files button in the Temporary Internet Files
section.
Hit the Close button.

Keep in mind that you can limit the size of your TIF folder.
On the General page of Internet Options, hit the Settings
button in the Browsing history section.
Set the amount in the box next to "Disk space to use" to
something between 50 and 100 MB.
Hit OK twice.

Good luck

?

=?iso-8859-1?Q?_db_=B4=AF`=B7.._=3E=3C=29=29=29=BA

i suggest that you
create a new folder as
such C:\TEMP

(presuming your root
directory is on a c drive.)

then move your "internet
temp folder" into the directory
above.

(neither of those matter, this behaviour is not dependent on either)

Yes. You aren't seeing the further system/hidden folders.

Turn DOWN the IE allocation, and use ccleaner (www.cccleaner.com) to clear
out these folders easily. Note that during ccleaner install, you're
offered a toolbar (Yahoo, IIRC). Accept it if you want, don't if you
don't. It's not required.

Another option is to tweak the registry to allow viewing of the Cookies,
History, and Temporary Internet Files directories. The following registry script
can be imported into RegEdit, and after rebooting, all three directories will
be visible in Windows Explorer:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"ExcludeProfileDirs"=""
