Temporary Internet Files

I just purchased a new PC running XP Home SP2. In Internet Options the
settings for Temporary Internet Files are set for C:\Documents &
Settings\HP_Owner/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files. There is no such
folder on my drive. I found a Temporary Internet Files folder under
C:\Windows\Temp folder. There is one folder under that containing 4 files
which are empty. There is also a Cookies and History folder which look like
they are empty. It's strange because it says IE 5 content and I have IE6. I
do have a Favorites and Cookies folder under Local Settings\HP_Owner. If I
don't have a Local Settings Folder and the Temp/Temporary Internet Files
isn't the correct location, where are my files being saved to?

I think these are usually hidden folders in the profile.
Go to tools/folder options/view and tick show hidden files.

Please bear in mind that hidden files are hidden so that you don't
delete things that you need to run windows.

Kind regards

The folder does exist. it is >>>
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Local Settings is a Hidden System folder. So anything in it will also be
Hidden.

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

The Content.IE5 folder has nothing to do with what version of IE you have.

Temporary Internet files are saved to both the locations mentioned above.

To delete *all* Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box Delete all offline content {This cleans >> C:\Documents
and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files AND
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and \Content.MSO
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.
-----

If you want, try this: Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
scroll down to the bottom | check: Empty Temporary Internet Files folder
when browser is closed | click Apply | OK. Entirely up to you, but if you
want to be rid of this, it is done automatically. Deletes the content of
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files but not the Content.IE5 or Content.MSO folders.

Also: Start IE | Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Days to keep
pages in history: 0 | Apply | OK.

That is an account that has been set up by HP for possible initial or
demonstration use. Provided you have made yourself a proper regular
User account, then when you log in on that it should have a Temp
Internet in your own folder under Documents and settings. But you might
prefer to use the Move Folder in its Settings in Internet Options to put
it somewhere else, out of the way. And you should be able in Control
Panel - User Accounts to be able to delete that HP_Owner account, and
its files

Helen,

If you mean C:\WINDOWS\Temp, then no, just delete the contents of the Temp
folder.

If you mean
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
Just delete the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder.

If you mean
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
Just delete the contents of the Content.IE5 folder. The random named
folders.

Some of these folders cannot be deleted, they are system folders. Some of
these folders can be deleted, but they will just be recreated again by XP.

You can delete anything in any temporary folder if it is not in use.

XP will not let you delete anything that is in use. And will let you know.

Also see Alex's post.
