I was wondering what file stores all the deleted e-mail
that has been emptied from outlook express? It is stored
somewhere in the computer, but where? I am currently
running XP Home. Also, where does all the trash go when
it is emptied out of the trash bin?

Deleted emails go into "Deleted Items" folder. If you do not clear out the
deleted items folder, the deleted emails should still be there.

As for the deleted trash, the files still exists on the hard drive. it is
only the file name index pointer that gets deleted. To recover the deleted
files, you will need an un-erase utility, such as Norton Unerase.

The trash bin keeps track of the files that are deleted,
they actually stay in the same location on the drive AFAIK.
When you empty the trash (recycle bin) you are just
over-writing a small part of the file name. The recycle bin
protects the directory and clusters of a file until you
delete that data too.

I just made all that up, so a real computer tech may want to
correct the errors.

Outlook Express does not use the recycle bin, once deleted,
you need to spend some time and dollars using data recovery
software to recover what ever has not been deleted and
over-written. The FBI can recover it for you if you are a
terrorist or child-porn target. You probably can't afford
the cost of doing it yourself.

No file stores deleted emails that have been cleared from the deleted
folder. They would only be available if you left them in the deleted folder.
When you empty the recycle bin the data/files go no where. Windows just
marks the space that the files occupy as free and lets it be over written.
The files at this point could/might be able to be brought back. Once that
area of the drive is written over the files are essentially gone(the fbi or
nsa could retrieve them). Meaning that part of the drive has different
files/data on it now, so the old ones are gone.

Actually the text of deleted messages wil still be visible in the deleted
items.dbx file. Only if you've compressed the folders will the mail be
completly lost.
Open deleted items.dbx in notepad.
