My friend had pictures on her computer and her hubby deleted them all. The
trash bin was also emptied. These were picture of the kids that cannot be
replaced. SHe called the "Geek Squad" computer place in her area and they
want over $250 to help her. Is there anything that she can do to retrieve
them.
Thanks in advance,
Valerie

If your friend wants any chance to recover the files tell her to STOP using the
machine, any use of the machine has the potential of overwritting the areas on the
disk where the files are/were.

Search online using another machine for third party file recovery apps such as
"Recover 4 All" (limited), "Restoration" or "Rest2514" or any other you may find.
Others may suggest more here as time goes by. Keep in mind that no matter which app
is used some files may be lost without any chance of recovery, especially if the
machine has been used since the deletion of the files.

To make it easier for the apps I mentioned I'll make them available for you to
download from my site at:
http://basconotw.mvps.org/dwnlds.htm

I'll add links for them at the top of the page for a limited time so you can
download them. Give me approx 15 min to get it set up for you and please let me know
when you have them so I can remove the links from the page.

Stop using the computer. Deleted files are not removed from the drive, just
their space is marked as available so the more the computer is used, the
greater the chance those files will be overwritten.

Use a drive imaging program that allows you to image the drive by booting
the imaging program CD, image the drive to an external hard drive so you
have an original copy to preserve what's there. Acronis True Image Home
version 10 is one example of an excellent drive imaging program.

Then download a couple of these free file recovery utilities on another
computer, copy to floppy or flash drive and run them on the computer in
question.

http://www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html

If those don't work there are pay utilities to try. They usually will allow
you to run it for free to see if anything can be recovered, and if so then
you have to pay for use. Gary gave one, and here is another:

“Undelete†(formerly from Executive Software)
http://www.undelete.com/file-recovery.asp?pass=822317868

Lastly there are data recovery services which are excellent but quite
costly. Only you can determine the value of the photos.

Brian,
I have sent this information on to my friend but have not heard back from
her today. Once I hear, I will let you know and if you don't hear back from
me by this evening, remove the links off your site. I so appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Val

If after I have removed the links and your friend hasn't downloaded either yet,
rock has provided a link to the "Restoration" app and a few others. I'll leave them
until tommorrow.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data recovery software will help you in
recovering all those pictures which are lost due to accidental
deletion or data lost due to system format.
Download the demo version of the software from:
http://www.stellarinfo.com/partition-recovery.htm
Demo will help you to determine the software before purchase, as it
gives the user to view the files. If one can see the recovered file
then can proceed to get the full version.

There are many such programs, and many of them are freeware (such as
the excellent Restoration, at
http://www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html ). No need to buy a
product.

However, none of these work all the time. The reason they work at all
is that "deleting" a file doesn't actually delete it; it just marks
the space as available to be used. The problem is that the space used
by the file is likely to become overwritten very quickly, and this
makes the file unrecoverable by such software.

So your chances of successfully recovering this file are decent if you
try recovering it immediately after deleting it, and rapidly go
downhill from there.

There are a lot more sophisticated ways to search for deleted files
and the free programs haven't had the same level of R&D put into them
to do it. Why risk writing off your photos for the sake of saving a
few bucks?

To recover deleted pictures, Flash Recovery from www.diskinternals.co.uk
is well worth trying. It's trialware, so if it can't find your
pictures you won't have to pay for it.

You can also download an ISO to make a data recovery CD from the same
site. You can run the recovery tools right off the CD, with no
installation. (But don't download the ISO file to the drive you want
to recover stuff from!)

It has nothing to do with risking anything or saving a few bucks. I
don't at all agree with the concept that if commercial it's better
than if it's freeware. There are *many* examples of freeware being
better than commercial ware.

As a single example, Avast! is a much better anti-virus program than
Norton Anti-Virus.

Chances are no if the user has been using the pc since the problem was
discovered.

ps ALWAYS KEEP YOUR MOST IMPORTANT DATA ON CDS IN SEPARATE PLACES IN
YOUR HOME, ESPECIALLY PHOTOS.

And don't trust CDs either, as old/cheapo brands can decay. Backup
off site, duplicate onsite, and to be extra extra sure, print 'em
out...
