Delayed Response to Mouse and Keyboard Inputs

Just loaded XP Professional and all MS updates on home
Dell Dimension 500 MHz machine with 384 MB RAM and 3 GB of
free space on 20 GB HDD.

Computer does not respond immediately to mouse and
keyboard inputs during normal operation. I mouse over
buttons/icons with no response (button/icon doesn't
highlight). I click on the button/icon and do not get an
immediate response. I takes 5-10 seconds for the computer
to respond to the input. It eventually responds to all
inputs, including multiple clicks. This creates havoc
with windows opening and closing in sequence. This
happens more than it doesn't, but it is randomly
intermittent. It seems to be worse after re-start or
recovery from the screen saver.

Any suggestions?

Two possibilities among many:
1. Have you loaded the most recent drivers for those input devices, as WinXP
has fairly generic drivers.
2. If you downloaded a large number of noncritical updates without testing
their effect on your system, it might be one of the updates.
3. I bet Kelly has an answer.
