Delay opening Explorer

I've encountered an annoying problem for about a week now. I've searched the
net and can't seem to find a solution.

When I open a NEW Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer window, it takes
about 8 seconds to appear. Normal desktop programs are fine, just Explorer
type windows, like Recycle bin, My Pictures, My Documents, IE, etc. I click
on them, hard drive light works for about a second and then nothing for about
8 seconds, then the window appears almost fully loaded, hardly any wait for
icons to appear.

I've run a virus scan and spyware scan, nothing. I haven't installed
anything except the last windows patch from the 13th. I uninstalled those,
rebooted, same problem.

I've had the laptop for almost a year, runs incredibly smooth, except this.
It's an HP, AMD 3200+ 2.0Ghz, 512 Ram.

Does anyone have a solution or suggestion? Is there a registry item I can
edit that would eliminate this delay?

Thanks,
Nelson

With that much RAM check and see if running the desktop in a separate
process space is able to help you along?

Explorer as a Separate Process :

I solved it, the computer did an update for Java J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
update 6. I uninstalled it and the problem went away.

Thanks for your help

Try using a program such as Spybot Search & Destroy to view your startup
items
and BHO's to find out what may be loading with IE.

Nelson,

Thank you for putting your resolution out here for all to see. I just
updated my machine with this update, so I will see if it causes the same
problem.
