Windows Explorer Starts on Login

I installed some video and audio updates today. I had problems with the
video installs so I uninstalled them and went back to a previous version.
Everything seems to work OK, except ...

Whenever I logon the system appears to be trying to do something that is
not working. It not hung, it is just taking a real long time in the start
process. After about 20-30 seconds windows explorer opens in the
C:\windows\system32 folder. This delay is before any of the shortcuts in
ALL Start and UserID Start are processed. After windows explorer opens
those shortcuts process correctly.

I have looked at all the start up processes, services, and so on using
autoruns (as well as double checking the run key in the registry). I have
checked event log. I have run Filmon with a C:\Windows\system32 filter and
tried to click capture. None of these actions have given me any idea of
what is happening.

My guess is that something is trying to run, times out, and causes windows
explorer to open.

I have run out of ideas. I am thinking about doing a major recovery from my
backup, but would prefer to find the cause.

I am out of ideas. Anyone care to offer a solution?

Thanks,

Mike
