delay/freeze when copying files in the background

I built a new system using i7 930. It works fine except that every
time when I copy something (whether from one HD to another or through
network), there is a long delay or freeze in the foreground for
approximate 10 to 20 seconds. Then it will continue while copying in
the background. My drives are all SATA.

Without giving all the details (I have to do it at home), what are the
possible reason for this delay?

Thanks for the help,

Is it a delay or a freeze, can you do other stuff in the pause ?

If its a pause but you can still do other stuff, sounds like a drive timeout.

Are the sata data cables good tight fits in their connectors ?

If you're running Windows 7, then you can use the Resource Monitor to
find out what's causing it. You can get to the RM by going to the Task
Manager -> Performance tab -> Resource Monitor, or simply typing
Resource monitor on the search programs. Once you're in RM, you can go
to the Disk tab, and open up the Storage dropdown menu. Monitor the
Disk Queue Length of each of the drives, and then begin the copy
operation. If the disk queue length goes over 1.00 at any time, then
you are having a problem.

That last is just plain wrong.

And it wont produce a complete stall for 10-20 seconds either.

It will if the disk queue is *way* over 1.00, like say 5.00 or 10.00 or
whatever.
