Definitions will not download

I have just downloaded Defender and when I try to update the defnitions, I
get an error 80244001. I suspect our corp firewall is preventing it. Is
there a place to manually download the updates?

No, I am not. I get a message that says:
Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

When I let it proceed, it takes me back to the Custom or Express. When I
select Custom, it returns to the above message.

You are going to need to resolve this to get definitions.

Windows Update troubleshooting is not one of my skills. I'm running out of
time today, I'm afraid--I'd recommend searching the microsoft KB at
support.microsoft.com to see if they have a document on this--I've seen a
list of items to register somewhere in these groups, but it wouldn't be easy
to find.

Hi Joel,

If you are experiencing other issues with Windows Update then I would
suggest you could try using "Dial-a-fix" to repair your WU issues.

This utility can be downloaded from:

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

The "marketing blerb" on this tool is:

"Dial-a-fix is an advanced utility for Microsoft Windows written by DjLizard
in Borland Delphi that repairs various Windows problems, such as:
a.. Windows Update errors and problems with Automatic Updates
b.. SSL, HTTPS, and Cryptography service (signing/verification) issues
c.. COM/ActiveX object errors and missing registry entries
d.. and more.
Dial-a-fix (hereby known as "DAF") is a collection of known fixes gleaned
from Microsoft Knowledgebase articles, Microsoft MVPs, and other important
support forums, that will assist you in repairing problems with your system.
Although this tool is ordinarily meant for power users, technicians, and
administrators, it is quite safe to use even without technical guidance
(although it is recommended). Simply choose the solutions you wish to apply
via checkmarks, and click GO. There are other buttons and tools present on
the main dialog as well, such as the policy scanner. All tools and
checkmarks identify their purpose when you mouse over them.

DAF works on all pertinent 32-bit versions of Windows: 98, 98SE, Me, 2000,
XP, and Server 2003. Dial-a-fix dynamically disables functions that are not
applicable to your version of Windows. The version of Windows with the most
support and functionality is currently Windows XP."

I have used this tool to repair otherwise intractable issues with Windows
XP, including issues with Windows Update the BITS service and related
issues.

If you need help with this tool then read though the Wiki for some helpful
tips on using this package

Kind Regards

Simon

"Hi elhirsch,
I noticed the 80244001 error in the log file that you posted. Often this
error occurs due to the MSXML3.dll file not being properly registered. Try
re-registering that file.....

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box.

((The thread later suggests rebooting after this process may be necessary
---shannis))

Now try the Windows Update site."

......Thak you Patti. The Updates are now downloading.

....I had the same problem as Jalbert and elhirsch. I followed just one of
patti's suggestions, "Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box." and it works great now.

THANK YOU!

It looks like registering the MSXML3 was what I needed. This is pretty
strange I had two pc's that have the same problem. It is interesting that
both had this problem.

As soon as I registered the dll, I ran winUpd on one of the boxes and it
prompted me to install a coupld of updates to WinUpd. After those
completed, I let it continue and it found a number of updates, including the
Defender update. On the second box, I got the same updates to WinUpd.
After they installed, I opened the Defnender ui and had it look for updates.
As expected, it found and update the signature defs. So, looks like I am
all fixed up.

Thanks to all who helped on this one.

Hi,

This would seem to reinforce the idea that many of the issues folks are
seeing with WD and updates are general system issues, not specific to WD
itself.

With this in mind I would still refer folks to use Dial-a-fix to resolve
these sorts of issues with Windows, before assuming that WD is the cause of
them.

This utility can be downloaded from:

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Kind Regards

I don't disagree with your premise--but if you have this specific error, I'd
much rather go with reregistering XML3--simpler, quicker, and no download
needed.

Terrific--glad that worked, and that shannis was able to spot your issue and
bring Patty MacLeod's advice to bear on it.
